For Alco Outlet we built an online store that brings together the product catalogue, order taking, and the management of prices and stock.

The client needed a site that could hold more than 500 products and let them be managed easily. With that many products, one of the main challenges was keeping prices and stock under constant control. What was needed was a system that cut down manual work and connected the information on the site to the company's internal software.

The goal

The main goal was to give Alco Outlet a single online sales space where a customer could:

  • browse products by category;
  • see detailed information about a product;
  • find discounts and special offers;
  • add a product to the basket;
  • place an order online;
  • use the site on a computer or a mobile device.

For the business, what mattered was making products, prices, stock and orders as simple as possible to manage.

UX/UI design and visual style

The site was designed around Alco Outlet's brand colours and visual identity.

Before the work began, these were agreed with the client:

  • the basic structure of the pages;
  • how products would be split into categories;
  • the layout of the home page;
  • the design of the product cards;
  • how promotions and offers would be shown;
  • the structure of the basket and checkout pages;
  • the layout of the mobile version.

The UX/UI work focused on making products easy to find. However large the catalogue, a visitor had to be able to reach the category, brand or product they wanted quickly.

More than 500 products

More than 500 products were placed in the online store.

Categories and subcategories were created to organise them. Each product page can carry the information, price, photo and other details it needs.

With a catalogue this size, sound categorisation matters more than anything. A visitor should not get lost in it, and should reach the product they came for in a few steps.

Synchronised with OPTIMO

One of the main technical parts of the project was connecting the site to the OPTIMO system.

The integration was built so that the data in the online store and in OPTIMO stay in step with each other.

Through the system:

  • products sold on the site appear in the OPTIMO platform;
  • stock levels update in step;
  • prices entered in OPTIMO pass to the site automatically;
  • when a price changes, there is no need to edit each product by hand;
  • the business can control stock from a single system;
  • the risk of a different price or stock level showing on different platforms goes down.

With more than 500 products, updating prices by hand would have taken a great deal of time — and the risk of an error grew with it. With the synchronisation in place, the Alco Outlet team no longer manages the same data separately in several systems.

Taking and managing orders

On the site a customer can choose a product, add it to the basket and place an order.

The online store includes:

  • product cards;
  • detailed product pages;
  • categories and subcategories;
  • a basket;
  • a checkout form;
  • discounts and promotions;
  • order management in the admin panel.

Orders that come in through the site can be seen and handled from the WordPress admin panel.

Administration

The site is built on WordPress and WooCommerce.

Through the admin panel the company's staff can:

  • add a product;
  • edit an existing product;
  • manage categories;
  • change product photos;
  • add promotions;
  • view orders;
  • change an order's status;
  • view customer details;
  • update the site's main content.

The admin panel lets the company handle most day-to-day changes without a developer.

Built for mobile devices

The online store adapts to screens of every size.

The mobile version was built with these in mind:

  • browsing products easily;
  • moving quickly between categories;
  • adding a product to the basket quickly;
  • filling in the checkout form comfortably;
  • buttons and text at the right size;
  • pages that display properly on a phone and a tablet.

This matters especially for an online store, because most customers browse products on a phone.

The technical side

The project was built with these technologies and systems:

  • WordPress;
  • WooCommerce;
  • a UX/UI design agreed individually;
  • synchronisation with OPTIMO;
  • a product and order management system;
  • a design built for mobile devices.

The work done

Within the project we:

  • planned the site's structure;
  • prepared the UX/UI design;
  • created a visual style around the brand colours;
  • built the online store on WordPress;
  • set up WooCommerce;
  • placed more than 500 products;
  • created categories and subcategories;
  • set up the basket and checkout;
  • added a discounts and promotions system;
  • synchronised prices with OPTIMO;
  • synchronised stock with OPTIMO;
  • passed sold-product data across;
  • set up the admin panel;
  • prepared the mobile and tablet versions;
  • tested the project and launched it.

The result

Alco Outlet has an online store that lets customers browse products and order them, and makes prices and stock simpler for the business to manage.

With the OPTIMO integration, the company no longer has to keep prices and stock for more than 500 products in check by hand on the site. The data is managed automatically, which saves time and lowers the risk of the two drifting apart.
